Mathilda (Natalie Portman) is the daughter of a minor gangster who has been siphoning off some drugs for himself. As a revenge the whole family is killed by some renegade DEA members lead by Stansfield (Gary Oldman). Mathilda escapes the massacre by taking refuge in her mysterious, solitary neighbor's appartment.
Neighbour Leon (Jean Reno) is a hit man of European origin who works in New York City, describing himself as a cleaner. When Mathilda discovers what Leon does for a living, she decides she wants to be a cleaner too, and asks Leon to show her the tricks of the trade. After training in gun cleaning, target practice, and assassination theory, she's ready to kill the murderers of her family.
