Michelle PfeifferThe story centres on the life of Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), a young member of the New York gentry in the 1870s. He is a successful lawyer, he owns a beautiful home, and is just recently engaged to the beautiful and proper May Welland (Winona Ryder). Upon announcing his engagement, he meets for the first time since childhood May's cousin, one Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer). She has just returned from Europe after leaving her abusive husband, a Polish Count.

Daniel Day LewisIt is soon obvious that Archer and Countess Olenska are attracted to each other in the most gripping of ways: they understand each other. Archer's dilemma becomes painfully clear - proceed with what society deems proper and marry the rather vapid May, or allow his heart and passions to carry him far from the realm of what is conventionally acceptable.

Release date: September 17, 1993

The movie was shot in: The state of New York, Pennsylvania (both USA) and Paris (France). A lot of the exteriors were shot in the town of Troy, upstate New York.

Writer Edith Wharton won in 1921 the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The age of innocence

The film was originally to be released in fall of 1992, but was held back by over a year to allow director Martin Scorsese more time to edit.

Researchers looked for all the places Wharton knew in New York. Artists recreated 500 paintings for all the rooms. There are seven dinner scenes in the movie. Each of them represents a family, and the differences in design suggest the differences in the families.Source / More (Book)

The movie was released two times before: In 1924 (silent) and in 1934.

The book The Age of innocence was named to the list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the editorial board of the American Modern Library.

April 29, 1958

Michelle worked as an optometrist's assistant and supermarket checkout girl before she was discovered by Hollywood. Her career began with appearances in short-lived TV comedies and such films as The Hollywood Knights (1980).

Landing the female lead in Grease 2 (1982) wasn't a success either and few moviegoers took notice. The next year Pfeiffer proved she had staying power in 1983's Scarface.

She proved a capable actress during the eighties with several Oscar nominations and Michelle rapidly ranked among Hollywood's leading stars. In 1997, she began to produce, as well in star in, her own projects.
