1957 Sweden Black / White 95 minutes
The
wild strawberries of the title are a Swedish symbol for the emergence
of spring, the rebirth of life. And so the characters in the film are
concerned with life, and death, and their never ending cycle. The film
concerns Isak Borg (Victor Sjostrom) a 76-year- old man who sets out
to visit the University of Lund to be feted on the 50th anniversary
of receiving his degree.
En
route Borg clashes with his estranged daughter in law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) and meets and travels further
with a trio of young hitchhikers led by the vivacious teen Sara (Bibi Andersson). In several dream sequences
Borg sees his past life and coming death. But the specific references in the film go back to Bergman's own
experiences, among them Isak's dream where he discovers himself in a coffin.
