Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis play the title characters, who decide to take a vacation away from there dreary lives. However, Louise leaves without telling her husband Darryl (Christopher McDonald) who's puffed up with self-importance as the district sales manager of a rug company. The two stop at a country western bar, where Loise is almost raped by one of the local boys.Thelma saves her by shooting the guy.

They are convinced that no one would ever believe their story, that the only answer for them is to run, and to hide. They have adventures along the way, some sweet, some tragic, including a meeting with a shifty but sexy young man named J.D. (Brad Pitt). Hal Slocumb (Harvey Keitel) is a fed and the only person who has sympathy for the two women, even though he is forced to chase them across the South.
