- The American Film Institute (AFI) is, in their words, an American institute providing leadership in screen education and the recognition and celebration of excellence in the art of film, television and digital media.
They produced in 2007 their Hit parade called AFI's 100 YEARS...100 MOVIES . It contains the first 100 years of American (mostly) movies by making a definitive selection of the 100 greatest American movies of all time, as determined by more than 1,500 leaders from the American film community.
- British magazine Sight and Sound compiles since 1952, every 10 years, a list of the best films of all time. In 2002 they produced two lists, receiving contributions from 145 film critics, writers and academics, and 108 film directors. The critics list and the directors

- The Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB) is the worlds largest movie web site. Visitors can vote for their favorite movie and in this way, a Top 250 is compiled. This list changes every week, although the top 25 is pretty steady. (Our calculation: June 21, 2007)
Calculation
We take from each list the top 50 to form our own hit parade. It's a simple calculation, number 1 gets 50 points (51-1), nr 2 gets 49 points (51-2) and so on.
Let's look at our number 1, The Godfather.
It ranks number 2 at AFI, so that's 51-2 = 49 points
It ranks number 4 at S&S Critics, so that's 51-4=47 points
It ranks number 2 at S&S Directors, so that's 51-2=49 points
It ranks number 1 at IMDB, so that's 51-1=50 points
Total = 49+47+49+50 = 195 points

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA), Spielberg began experimenting with 8mm short films when he was only in grade school. After he had directed episodes of TV series Spielberg`s first feature-length TV movie, Duel (1971), earned the filmmaker critical praise and a chance to jump to the big screen.
The nightmarish production problems on the bigbudget Jaws (1975) almost detoured his rise to prominence. But his success could still grow bigger. He hit gold again directing Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) but the highest grossing movie of all time up to that point was the alien story, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
In the late 1980s, a string of relative disappointments coincided with a period of personal upheaval for Spielberg. He made a major career resurgence in 1993 with the special effect-heavy dinosaur extravaganza Jurassic Park.
Steven produced and directed Schindler's List (1993) a stirring film about the Holocaust and won finally best director at the Oscars. In the mid-nineties Spielberg co-founded the production company Dreamworks, responsible for many box office successes in the nineties and the new century. In 2006 he sold it for $1.6 billion to Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures.
In 2008 Steven will release Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and he also wants to direct an Abraham Lincoln bio-pic.
