How can a man so ugly be so handsome?
Syria 1925. Colonel Feroud (Lee J. Cobb), the head of the French secret services based in the Syrian capital, is an idealist. Harry Smith (Humphrey Bogart) is not. For a tidy profit he runs guns to the Arab insurrectionists attempting to overthrow the French Protectorate. Smith complicates matters for himself by stealing Feroud's girlfriend (Märta Torén). Then he's arrested and brought to Feroud, who sentences him to execution unless he can get him an audience with Emir Hassan, the leader of the resistance.
Harry finds his uncomfortable position agitated even further when the resistance takes Feroud prisoner. He's now in the position of playing hero to rescue his rival. Only after being betrayed by the Arabs and roughed up by the French authorities Smith learns that mixing business and pleasure can prove deadly.
