The Lady Eve
He's not backwards. He's a scientist.
The very rich but naive Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) has been in the jungle for a year and returns to the U.S.A. by ship. Two card-sharpers working the North Atlantic, father (Charles Coburn) and daughter Jean (Barbara Stanwyck) prey on him. Jean surprises herself by falling in love with Charles, but he rejects her when he finds out about her profession.
Vowing for revenge, Jean sets about breaking his heart, like he broke her own. She reconquers Pike under the guise of the posh Lady Eve Sidwich, a flower of English society, niece of Sir Alfred McGlennan Keith (Eric Blore), another con man. Only after achieving her harsh revenge does Jean realize that she still loves Charles. Again on a ship Jean meets Charles for the third time, this time as herself. Without realizing her past ruse as Lady Eve, Charles instantly falls in love with her again.
