The Two Jakes
It never goes away
In 1948, 11 years after the events in Chinatown1, private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a middle-aged war hero, who has become a prosperous and respected private investigator. One day he helps Jake Berman (Harvey Keitel) to confront his cheating wife. But Berman murders his wife's lover who also turns out to be his business partner.
When the name of Katherine Mulwray turns up on an audiotape, it revives Gittes' ghosts of events that occurred in Chinatown. Soon more pressure comes, now in the form of smooth talking criminal Mickey Nice (Rubén Blades) who wants the recording. Gittes must investigate if it was justifiable homicide or murder and how it connects with California's booming oil industry. It sends Jake on an inward journey to the past and his feelings of guilt, depression, and regret.
