A Scandal in Bohemia

There is but one woman to him:
The beautiful Irene Adler of dubious and questionable memory.

A gentleman wearing a mask visits Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett). Holmes quickly sees through the man's disguise and identifies him as the King of Bohemia. The King explains that a former opera singer named Irene Adler (Gayle Hunnicutt) has a compromising letter and a photograph of the King and her.

Sherlock goes to her house, disguised as a wounded priest, and is inevitably carried into her home. Watson meanwhile throws a smoke rocket into the house. Irene tries to save that which is dearest to her, and so he spies the photo behind a panel in the sitting room. The next morning, they call on Irene, planning to take the photo. She has fled to the continent, taking the photo with her. During his investigation, Holmes gradually comes to realize that the King's story does not ring true to the woman's character: rather, he recognizes Adler as an independent and resourceful woman, herself a victim of the King.
