James Stewart flew up for the premiere, which began with a parade through Portland (USA). He walked on, said a few words and was applauded. Then Rock Hudson walked on and before he could speak, the young people screamed and pushed so hard the platform started to collapse. To everyone's surprise, the fans had yelled more for Hudson than they had for Stewart. “I went to my head—I was floating! Me over Jimmy Stewart? I went back to the hotel that night and got drunk. I couldn't sleep, I wanted more!”

The cast and crew spent several weeks on location in the Oregon wilderness, which James Stewart enjoyed immensely according to his co-star Arthur Kennedy. Stewart “relished the time away from home. Domesticity, children, and even the devoted ministrations of a loving wife, got on his nerves after a while, hence his joy in male company and the wilderness.”
