The film is the great adventure -- the costly, exacting mistress
Bergman was the son of a Lutheran pastor and was brought up in a strictly religious home. He attended Stockholm University in 1937, where he studied art, history, and literature. There for the first time he became involved in the theatre and began writing and acting in plays and directing student productions.
Ingmar made his directorial debut in 1945 with Crisis but the prototypical Bergman movie, filled with the thematic and stylistic aspects, would not arrive until 1949, beginning with The Devil's Wanton.
In the 1950's Ingmar embarked on a string of classics, including The seventh seal(1957) and Wild strawberries. (1957). In 1961 Bergman embarked upon his ambitious trilogy, Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light (1962), and the final portion, The Silence (1963).
In 1966, he directed Persona, a film that he himself considered one of his most influential works.
After a controversy with the tax authorities, Bergman left Sweden in 1976. Though he was later cleared of the charges, he remained in Munich, Germany and did not film again in Sweden until 1982.
In 1982 Bergman released one of his most autobiographical films, the richly detailed Fanny and Alexander.
After his retirement from cinema, Ingmar directed a number of television specials, wrote several other scripts and directed plays at the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre.
