W.R. Hearst boycots a movie

January 8, 1941 William Randolph Hearst, owner of the Hearst newspaper chain, forbid any of his newspapers from accepting ads for Citizen Kane, slated for release later in the year. The film was generally interpreted as a study of Hearst, portrayed as the fictional Charles Foster Kane.

Clark Gable’s wife died

67 years ago (January 16, 1942) Gable’s wife Carole Lombard was on a tour to sell war bonds when the airplane she was traveling in crashed into a mountain near Las Vegas (USA), killing all aboard including Lombard's mother. Clark was devastated by the tragedy and would never recover.

Humphrey died in 1957
