The story was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. There have been over 120 film versions. This was one of the first. With John Barrymore (Mr. Hyde) and Louis Wolheim (Music Hall Proprietor).

Dr. Jekyll samples his own brew. However, instead of bringing out his goodness, the drug summons out the most evil parts of his personality. He becomes Fredric March (Mr. Hyde) and becomes involved with the prostitute Miriam Hopkins (Ivy Pierson).

This version of the story was almost lost because in 1941 when MGM remade the film, they also destroyed every print of the 1931 version that they could locate. With Fredric March (Mr. Hyde) and Rose Hobart (Muriel Carew).

This is the second sound version of the tale. MGM wanted Ingrid Bergman (Ivy Peterson) to play the good girl. She felt the role of Ivy was more challenging and persuaded the producers to switch roles. With Spencer Tracy (Dr. Henry Jekyll).
