Some critics objected to the way Alfred Hitchcock chose to end the sequence involving the delivery of the bomb on the bus. Hitchcock, stung by the criticism, said (in a 1972 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show) that he regretted his decision. Nonetheless, the treatment is faithful to Joseph Conrad's book.

The failure of the original copyright holder to renew the film's copyright resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.

In Hitchcock/Truffaut Interview Book (page 76), Hitchcock revealed that Robert Donat was supposed to play the detective, but Alexander Korda refused to release him. When John Loder was cast as the detective, Hitchcock felt that he wasn't suitable for the role. So the director was forced to rewrite the dialogue during the shooting.

In Hitchcock/Dick Cavett Interview, Alfred Hitchcock revealed that he made a terrible mistake with "Boy with the Bomb" Suspense Scene. Hitchcock said that he will never let the bomb go off in a "suspense scene", because the audience gets worked up. If the bomb is going to get exploded, then Hitchcock won't shoot the scene in "suspense".
