True GritI call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man
Frans Ross (John Pickard) has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney. His daughter, Mattie (Kim Darby), comes to take care of his body and belongings. She's determined to see the outlaw caught and killed. The headstrong Mattie selects the aging Cogburn (John Wayne) as her bountyhunter because she believes he has true grit. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn and they soon pair with young Texican La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), a Ranger paid to bring Chaney back to Texas for the killing of a state senator. After various complications, the unlikely trio sets out to find Chaney.
Complicating matters are Chaney's scurrilous cronies headed by Ned Pepper (Robert Duvall) who roam the area. After an accident, Mattie gets face to face with Chaney and wounds him before being kidnapped by Ned Pepper. Fearing for the girl's life, La Boeuf and Rooster pretend to retreat. Cogburn doubles back and attacks Pepper and his gang. Le Boeuf finds Mattie and moves Chaney to an area he thinks is secure. But then Chaney bludgeons La Boeuf and Mattie falls backwards into a snakepit. She's bitten by a rattlesnake and then Cogburn arrives.
