Penniless and adrift in a small shabby town, a young Frenchman (Yves Montand) and a group of men gather at the bar. Without jobs or opportunities, they pass the time drinking, flirting with the cleaning girl (Vera Clouzot) and getting on each others nerves. Jo (Charles Vanel) is a French gangster with a commanding personality and nerves of steel. Luigi a talkative Italian who was Mario's best friend and roommate until Jo arrived. And there is also Teutonic fugitive Peter Van Eyck.
In a desperate effort to improve their lot, the four desperate men undertake a mission steering two lorryloads of nitroglycerin to the site of an oil-well fire. Without special equipment, the nitroglycerine could go off at any moment. Former gangland hotshot Jo finds his once-fearless exterior cracked, while Mario discovers in himself a new grit and tenacity. As they ferry their explosive cargo to the faraway oil fire, each bump tests their courage, their friendship, and their nerves.
