The private life of Sherlock Holmes

We all have occasional failures.
Fortunately Dr. Watson never writes about mine.

The film is divided into two separate stories. Sherlock Holmes (Robert Stephens) is bored, and consequently indulging his cocaine habit to the frustration of his physician and friend Dr Watson (Colin Blakely). A Russian ballerina asks Sherlock to become the father of her child, and he gets out of it by pretending that he and Dr Watson are homosexual.

Then, in the second story, amnesiac Belgian mystery woman Gabrielle Valldon (Geneviève Page) turns up at their door. She is looking for her husband, a mining engineer hired to design an air pump. The investigation involves six missing midgets, villainous monks, a Scottish castle, the Loch Ness monster, and covert naval experiments.
