I want to go back to Mama and Papa on the bridge

Brigitte FosseyPaulette (Brigitte Fossey) has lost her parents during a bombing raid. Stranded, with only the body of her puppy, also killed in the attack, she wanders onto the property of a farm. Becoming fast friends with Michel, the youngest son (Georges Poujouly), the two children begin playing games imitating the tragedies of war around them.

Georges PoujoulyThey create a graveyard in which Paulette's dog is interred, along with other animals and insects, some of whom the children kill themselves. They do not see it as a morbid fixation but rather as a means through which to understand the illusory concept of death. Michel starts stealing the crosses from the cemetery in their locality and plant them. Then the police come to take Paulette away from the peasant family.
