The Disappearance of Lady Frances

Photo of Edward Hardwicke and Cheryl Campbell

One of the most dangerous classes is the drifting and friendless woman.

On a holiday, Watson (Edward Hardwicke) meets a lone, unwed and independent woman named Lady Frances Carfax (Cheryl Campbell). She decides to cross a lake in an ungainly skiff, falls out of it and is saved by a missionary in a wheelchair. Some time later, Frances vanishes from sight. She was visited just before by a tall bearded man who hounded her. Watson writes Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) a letter, explaining the situation.

While reading a newspaper, Holmes suddenly decides to visit his friend Watson. They find the bearded man, and he explains that he and Frances fell in love many years ago but that she would have nothing to do with him because of his turbulent past. Now Holmes knows what happened. The lady Carfax is in grave danger, and the missionary has got something to do with it.
