Mary Morstan (Cherie Lunghi) has got questions about her missing father and some mysterious gifts that have been arriving at her home on a regular basis – single, perfectly cut pearls. Now, she is summoned to meet her anonymous benefactor, but she may bring along two friends. She picks Sherlock Holmes (Ian Richardson) and Dr. John Watson (David Healy).Mary's tells that her father was a captain of an Indian regiment and later served as a prison guard near the Andaman Islands.

The trio is taken to meet Mr. Thaddeus Sholto (Richard Heffer), brother of Bartholomew (Clive Merrison) and son of the late Major Sholto (Thorley Walters). On his deathbed, Major Sholto revealed that he and father Morstan came into the possession of the Agra Treasure while stationed in India. He told his sons to send one pearl each year to Mary Morstan. But the Major died before he could tell his sons where to find the treasure. The friends set out on an exotic adventure laced with stolen diamonds, secret oaths and murder.
