New York detective Vincent LaMarca's (Robert de Niro) father was a child murderer, executed in the electric chair. After a messy divorce, Vincent abandoned his only child Joey (James Franco) to the care of his ex-wife. Then his son kills a drug dealer in a fight. Did Vincent's neglect doom Joey?
Joey calls him for help. But LaMarca Sr. wants to help Joey by getting him a decent lawyer; Joey wants his father to help emotionally more than legally. He wants someone to believe in his innocence. Joey's a target of overzealous police officers and a drug dealer (William Forsythe) who wants the drug money he thinks Joey stole. At the urging of his ex-wife, Vincent must set aside his self-imposed isolation and save his son.
