She continued performing in films while earning her degree in literature at Yale university. In 1988 Foster finally gained respect as an adult actress for her portrayal of the victim of a brutal gang rape in
The accused.
But she became a big star with her role of federal agent Clarice Starling in the megahit thriller
The silence of the lambs. Her directorial debut came in 1991 with

Panic room (2002) but turned down the opportunity to reteam with Hopkins in
