Biography:
Duvall made a memorable film debut in To kill a mockingbird (1962). In 1970, he appeared in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H, a year after his performance in The Rain People 1969) which marked the beginning of a lengthy association with director Francis Ford Coppola, for whom he starred in The Godfather (1972), The Godfather, Part II (1974)
and Apocalypse
Now (1979).
In 1983, he finally took home an Oscar, winning Best Actor for his performance as a washed-up country singer in Tender Mercies . The same year he directed his first film, Angelo, My Love. In 1989 Duvall appeared as Gus McCrae1, in the mini-series Lonesome Dove.
Many years later he produced, directed, wrote, starred and won an Oscar nomination for The apostle (1997).
Assassination Tango (2002) – the third film Robert directed – was notable for its clever incorporation of one of his passions – Argentinean tango dancing – into the plot.
In 2006 Robert won an Emmy Award for his role in the Western miniseries Broken Trail.
Now in his seventies, Robert is busier than ever with a string of films coming up

1. Duvall picked his role as Gus McCrae, the grizzled Texas Ranger, in the TV mini-series Lonesome Dove as his favorite from the eighty-four
movies he’d made up to that time. He received an Emmy nomination.

Robert Duvall said in The American 60 minutes show money was the reason he didn’t appear in The Godfather III. “If they paid Pacino twice what they paid me, that’s fine, but not three or four times, which is what they did.”.

Other sources say that Duvall wasn’t hired to keep the picture’s costs under control. The part was altered for the cheaper George Hamilton. A line of dialogue now says that Hagen died years before.
